The
Architecture of Memory - José Alberto Nemer
In the genealogy of humans as
creative beings - whom we have agreed on calling
"the artist" - there is no separation among its
multiple manifestations, either when it comes
to handling and improving techniques or in its
intellectual aspects. Life has always furnished
the best reasons for human beings to become creators.
The concepts of art and artist as well as the
relations they establish through the so-called
artistic production, i.e. the work of art, are
relatively recent. It is in the work of art that
the creator - a revered artisan of material culture
- activates a mysterious circuit between the paradigms
of society of a given time and the formal structures
of language. It is also in the work of art that
human beings celebrate a synthesis between the
obscure meaning of the drives and the unlimited
universe of the imaginary.
It is hard to avoid allusions
to the philosophical aspects of the artistic praxis
when we reflect upon the work of Fernando Velloso.
With him we are led to a territory where the boundaries
between artistic languages are blurred and the
artistic work is derived from constant practice.
Having studied architecture at college, Velloso
has never worked as an architect in the strict
sense. Whatever drove him to study architecture
becomes apparent in the architectonic quality
of his paintings. |
