The
impact of geometry
Geometry is present in Fernando
Velloso's art from the start of his career as
much as it is the product of the development of
his language, although the two dimensions do not
follow a linear progression (some figurative experiments
are made after his exercise of abstract art).
His preference for constructiveness was something
gradually revealed to him rather than the result
of intellectual speculation.
In the early 70s, Velloso was
looking for artistic learning and Augusto Rodrigues
suggested that he should study with Abelardo Zaluar.
Velloso was a secondary student when he first
arrived at Rodrigues' studio in Rio, and he was
impressed by his host's "sheer geometry". "I got
geometrical right away", recalls Velloso, saying
that this experience was more important than anything
that he would study in Architecture School, out
of which he would drop afterwards.
Two other artists made a strong
impression on Velloso besides Abelardo Zaluar:
Arcangelo Ianelli and Carlos Scliar. By the time
he started to get noticed on Belo Horizonte's
art circuit, these three had, according to Velloso,
already inoculated him with the geometry virus.
