A
Consideration
Taking under consideration the
investigations and the motifs that come to the
surface in Fernando Velloso's art under consideration,
it is hard not to notice that his language proposes
a synthesis between socio-historical substance
and eminently visual values linked to the plasticity
of the materials. It is not about using one in
favor of the other, or about elaborating metaphors
on the theme, but rather about defining, investigating,
and building a language in which these elements
are articulated. More than the mere product of
this concern, the visuality of his art is a means
of giving shape to the motif from the perspective
of investigation. Something that is beyond the
civilized proposition of a dialogue or the recognition
of a co-existence becomes apparent: it is the
collision that builds difference from the same
elements.
Faced with these works, we are
forced to "forget" the explicitly politically-motivated
figurative work of the 40s of the last century
in Brazil and Latin-America, without erasing its
social lesson, especially in its most generous
aspects, for instance the dream of de-colonized
imaginary. It is equally important to see as relative
the manipulation of icons, i.e. the pop experience
that spread around the world since the 60s, without
losing track of the strong semiotic conscience
this movement brought.
